Children Learn Integrity In Martial Arts

[caption id="attachment_3522" align="alignleft" width="300"] Integrity seems to be a lost characteristic in society... but The Dojo of Karate teaches the importance of integrity.[/caption] The Dojo of Karate has a high standard they hold every student to while training at our Martial Arts School. Integrity is something we teach our kids everyday when they come to Karate classes. What is Integrity? Wikipedia defines Integrity "as a concept has to do with perceived consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcome." So how do students at The Dojo of Karate learn integrity? First of all, our instructors explain to every student that their training in the Martial Arts is to protect themselves - a form of self-defense.  Karate is not used to hurt others, rather to defend ourselves, friends, and family.  This is always made clear during the first class, and reiterated throughout their martial arts career. In addition, The Dojo of Karate has students memorize what we call Student Creeds.  This is the foundation of our Karate school, as it sets the tone and expectations of all students.  Below is our student creed.

  1. I will develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that would reduce my mental growth or my physical health.
  2. I will develop self-discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.
  3. I will use common sense before self-defense, and never be abusive or offensive to myself or others.
By having students memorize these student creeds and hold them accountable to living by them, kids will begin to learn what integrity is and how to live a standard of life with high morals and ethics. In addition, we do certain activities and games that require students to be honest with each other in order to participate.  Once again, teaching children responsibility. So... do you want your child to learn integrity?  Do you want your child to have a role model in their life they can look up to? You owe it to your child to give them the best possible.  Martial Arts will help your child not only improve their confidence, but develop Life Skills they can carry for the rest of their lives.
