The Dojo of Karate holds monthly belt tests to help students achieve their goals — Black Belt
Adams 12 School District will have their Spring Break from March 25th to March 29th.
The Dojo of Karate usually has their Stripe Test and Belt Test Week on the last week of each month. And, since many families will potentially be out of town (The Dojo of Karate will be closed for part of the week), we’ve decided to move the Stripe Test / Belt Test to the 1st week of April, which is the 1st through the 5th.
Belt Test will be on Friday, April 5th at 5:00 PM.
The beginners White Belt Class will be canceled, as well as Elite Club. However, Black Belt Club will operate at it’s normal time — 6:15 PM.
Harlem Shake – Karate Dojo Style
The Harlem Shake is taking the Internet by storm… and also our Karate students, by doing the Harlem Shake – Karate Dojo Style
The Harlem Shake has been the new internet sensation that has been sweeping YouTube and other online video websites all over the world.
This Internet Meme gained popularity in February 2013, with various groups, organizations, and friends creating their version of the Harlem Shake, using a clip of electro-trap artist Baeer’s Harlem Shake.
From major sports teams, universities, and groups of friends, the Harlem Shake has been recreated numerous times on the internet, with each video trying to out perform the previous video.
So, what’s the purpose of the Harlem Shake…?
Absolutely nothing.
It’s just an easy video to create, edit, and place on YouTube, Viemo, and other video websites.
Sensei Javier Lozano Jr — Owner and Head Karate Instructor at The Dojo of Karate started to get wave of the Harlem Shake staying up late at night, watching ESPN Sports Center, with various sports teams putting together their version of the Harlem Shake.
So, Sensei Lozano went online to see if there were any martial arts schools doing the Harlem Shake, and well, there were a few… but not many.
The next day, he approached his Karate Students in Black Belt Club (an elite Karate group of students) and asked if they would be interested in doing the Harlem Shake – Karate Dojo Style!
The overwhelming response was YES!!
Sensei Lozano gave them a few ideas of things they could use during the making of Harlem Shake – Karate Dojo Style, and left the rest up to them and their parents.
A few of them didn’t know what the Harlem Shake was, so we showed them a few family approved versions so they could get an idea.
The following week, on Friday March 8th at 5:30pm, Karate students in the Black Belt Club began to create the internet meme Harlem Shake – Karate Dojo Style and Sensei Lozano playing the director.
Below is the end result The Dojo of Karate student’s putting in their hard work, effort, and enjoyment of just being kids.
Oh, and if you’re wondering which one is Sensei Lozano… he’s the tall “kid”.
Enjoy!

Board Breaking Karate Seminar

Confidence, focus, determination, and perseverance are just a few of the Black Belt characteristics our students gain when breaking boards.
The Dojo of Karate will be hosting their annual Board Breaking Karate Seminar on Friday, March 15th at 5:30 PM.
This is a great opportunity for students to learn how to break boards, while developing confidence, focus, perseverance, and determination.
Students at The Dojo of Karate don’t need to have experience in breaking boards, just the enthusiasm to learn how to break a board.
Sensei Lozano will take the time to teach students how to break boards with various Karate techniques, including a hammer fist strike, straight punch, palm strike, stomp kicks, side kicks, elbow strikes, and knee strikes.
While, it may be a bit intimidating for a Karate student to break a board with their hand or foot, but with a little focus, determination, and understanding how to use a specific Karate technique — students should be successful in breaking these boards.
In addition, parents have shown great joy in watching their child(ren) face their fears in breaking a board and actually succeeding and getting through the wood.
Though some boards may be tougher to break, then others — ultimately the Board Breaking Karate Seminar is designed to help teach students how various Karate techniques can be used in action.
The cost of the Board Breaking Karate Seminar is as followed:
Black Belt Club Member – $40
Non-Black Belt Club Member – $50
This will give each student 10 boards to break in about 90 minutes or until all the wood is broken.
There will be various stations, depending on age, size, and belt where students will be lined up with classmates and approach the front of the station to perform a break.
The Dojo of Karate will need parent volunteers to monitor each station to help encourage and guide students in breaking a board.
At the end of the Board Breaking Karate Seminar, students are encouraged to take home their broken boards to showcase their successes to friends and family members.
To reserve your spot, please signup at the front desk.
