June Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

Summer is here!

This is a very exciting time of year for The Dojo of Karate, as it allows for all of our students to enjoy outdoor activities as a school.

Checkout what we’ve got going on this month.

Pink Karate Belts

As many of you know, we are hosting a fundraising event for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

The Dojo of Karate will be selling Pink Karate Belts for $15 per belt.  Students will be allowed to wear the Pink Belts in class starting next week, when the belts come in.  So, make sure you put your order in, or your child may not have a Pink Belt!

From June 7th to June 11th, we will have Breast Cancer Awareness Week, and this is officially when students can begin to wear their Pink Karate Belts in all of their Karate classes.

And, $10 of the proceeds will go towards the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Our goal is to raise $3,000 as a school.

Breast Cancer Boot Camp

In addition, we will be hosting the 1st Annual Breast Cancer Boot Camp on June 12th from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM.

This will be a 1 hour fitness boot camp that takes all participants through a training session of our regular boot camps.  Exercises would include the use of kettlebells, resistance bands, sandbags, medicine balls, and much, much more!

And, after the workout, there will be a 30 minute consultation class from Dr. Mike Cartwright from Countryside Health & Wellness.  He will be giving a short lecture about health, fitness, and nutrition — and how it can help prevent breast cancer.

To signup for the Breast Cancer Boot Camp, please visit the link below, and fill out the form.

http://www.TheBreastCancerBootCamp.com

Again, our goal is to raise $3,000 as a school for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.  The more participants we get, the closer we can get to achieving our goal.  So feel free to pass on the information to friends, family members, and colleagues.

Karate Tournament

The next Karate Tournament that Black Belt Club members can compete in is the CKA Summer Jam in Parker, CO.  This tournament will be hosted on Saturday, June 26th.

If you are interested in competing, please make sure you get permission from Mr. Lozano, unless it has already been approved.

To learn more about this upcoming tournament, go to: http://coloradokarateassociation.org/

And, last month, Madeline P. and Mollee H. competed in the R.A.G.E. Karate Tournament.

Mollee H. got 5th place in Traditional Forms and a finalist in sparring.

Madeline P. got a 5th place in Sparring, 2nd place in Creative Forms, and 1st place in Traditional Forms.  She also had an opportunity to represent The Dojo of Karate for Forms Grand Champion.

Make sure when you see these two, you congratulate them!

Great job girls!

The Karate Kid

As many of you know, we had a successful Buddy Night / Movie Night last week.  And, the new Karate Kid movie comes out on Friday, June 11th.

We have decided to go as a school to watch The Karate Kid on Sunday, June 13th to a matinee, since it will possibly be less crowded and less expensive tickets for a family.

If you are interested in participating, we will have more information when it nears.

Martial Arts Summer Camp

Many parents have shown interest in the Martial Arts Summer Camp this year that we will be hosting.

Please keep in mind that we need for all parents to make a reservation by next week, in order to save their spot.  We have had interest from all sorts of families.

The cost for students training at The Dojo of Karate is $229 for 2 half-day camps on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

The camp will start on June 7th and run through June 30th.

This is a sports camp / martial arts camp, so your child will be working on all sorts of skills.  Not just Karate.

FaceBook Fan Page

Are you on Facebook?  If not, it’s a great way to reconnect with old and new friends.  Social networking is becoming the new way of communicating on a viral level.

If you’re a student at The Dojo of Karate, become a fan of The Dojo of Karate.  That way, we can still update you about any activities we may be hosting.

And, get your friends to become fans too.  They will be informed about free seminars we may be hosting, fundraisers, and special events.

New Karate Schedule

Remember, the new Summer Martial Arts Schedule will start on June 7th.  We made extra copies of the schedule, so feel free to grab one.

New Faces…

The Dojo of Karate will be hiring an Office Manager to help handle administrative tasks for the school.  This will also alleviate Mr. Lozano from other projects, so he can continue to focus on teaching classes, and growing our school.

This person is very familiar with the culture of The Dojo of Karate, and many of you are good friends with her.

They will be starting within the next couple of weeks.

In addition, as our school continues to grow, we will be looking for potential assistant instructors working as an apprentice, as well as, requiring our senior students to assist in Karate classes on a weekly basis.

This is how students will begin to gain better leadership skills, perfect their technique, and take pride in their training.

Until next time…

Mr. Lozano

Is Knowing Self-Defense Important?

If you are like most people, you are not quite familiar with basic self-defense skills.

Most of us live our lives without the slightest concern of learning how to protect you and your family because we live in a safe neighborhood, or your spouse can protect you.

In A Perfect World, We Don’t Need To Know Self-Defense

But, we don’t live in a perfect world…

This is why we believe it is important that everyone has an understanding and basic training in self-defense.

It’s not uncommon to experience a mugging at your local grocery store, an assault in your neighborhood, or  feel threatened by an unusual person while going to the gym.  These are all common locations that one may need to defend themselves.

All it takes is being off your guard.  Not being aware of your surrounding.  And being too scared and freezing to be a victim.

Many of us will say “well, that won’t ever happen to me.”

Are you willing to bet those words on Vegas odds?  I think not because you don’t know.

Here’s the point.  There is no guarantee you and your family will always be safe.  However, learning Self-Defense will give you a fighting chance to not only protect yourself, but also the necessary confidence that comes with it.

The Dojo of Karate is the best Martial Arts school in Colorado that teaches Adult Karate & Self-Defense — combining the two most effective self-protection methods..  Meaning, this is an elite program that is designed for the common, working man, or stay-at-home mom.

It is reality-based self-defense, with traditional Japanese fighting methods that will teach you proper striking techniques, pressure points, and confidence to do whatever it takes to fight back.  It’s easy to learn, and almost anyone can learn our curriculum in 3-4 months.

Are you interested in actually learning how to protect yourself?

The longer you wait, the more likely you can become another statistic.

One last note… The Dojo of Karate is conveniently located in Westminster. We service residents in the Broomfield, Westminster, Thornton, and Denver area.

March Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

Greetings!

We’ve had a wonderful couple of months so far at The Dojo Of Karate, which is great!

Last weekend, we had an extremely successful inner school tournament with over 50 competitors, and it looked like everyone had a blast.

We plan on hosting another inner school tournament in the Fall around September / October this year, and make it a traditional bi-annual event.  However, we will probably have to rent out a local gymnasium for a few hours, in order to accommodate all of the competitors and their guests.

So, here’s what’s going on next over the next few months…

Adult Self-Defense Seminar

As many of you know, we are hosting a FREE adult self-defense workshop on Saturday, March 20th, from 10:30am to 12:00pm.  This is reserved for the first 30 attendees, so I highly suggest you guys register now to save your spot.

To signup for the self-defense workshop click on the link below:

http://www.AdultSelfDefense.com

Feel free to pass on this link to your friends, co-workers, or family members, as we want to make sure we have an opportunity to teach several guests some reality-based, easy to learn self-defense techniques.  Our goal is to host 2-3 of these events per year in order to give back to our community.

Open Karate Tournament

The first open Karate Tournament for the year will be Saturday, March 13th in Parker, CO.  Please keep in mind that you must be a member of Black Belt Club in order to compete in this tournament, however, you can go as a spectator to support our school and your fellow classmates.

We have flyers at the front desk that you can grab, fill-out and mail back.

The Dojo of Karate is a member of the Colorado Karate Association, so if you would like to chase points and have an opportunity to win a Colorado State Title in your division, you can become a member for a small nominal fee.  You also save on your registrations during each event.

To learn more about the Colorado Karate Association simply go to the link below:

http://www.coloradokarateassociation.org/

There you can find a schedule of upcoming tournaments, divisions your and/or your child will be competing in, and information about becoming a member.

Super Kids Expo

Local magazine publisher, Yellow Scene will be hosting their 2nd Annual Super Kids Expo on Saturday, April 17th from 10am to 4pm at the YMCA on 95th and Arapahoe in Lafayette.

This expo is a great way for families to learn about local camps and activities you can signup your child for during the Summer.  The Dojo of Karate decided to purchase a booth for the event to promote our Summer Camp Special, which was a huge success last year.

We were also asked to do a Karate Demonstration for the event!

So, all of our Black Belt Club Members will have an opportunity to train for this event and put on a great show… indoors!

Over the next 5 weeks, Black Belt Club classes will basically be Demo Team Practice.  Since many of our students understand what to expect when putting on a demonstration, routines should be learned fairly quickly.

Please keep in mind that students must be apart of our Black Belt Club in order to participate for the Demo Team.

If your child will not be able to perform during the Super Kids Expo, they will train in Black Belt Club classes, as this allows them to learn certain routines.

To learn more about Yellow Scene, go to their website.

http://yellowscene.com

Karate Uniforms

As many of you know, the basic Karate uniforms students wear get fairly dirty quickly, or kids grow out of them.  And, they are practically impossible to get white.  If your child falls in that category, please understand we want our students to look presentable during classes and outside of The Dojo, therefore we are asking all parents and students to invest $30 to purchase a new uniform — if they are about to fall apart, getting to small, or no longer white.

The Dojo of Karate carries all sizes, so feel free to talk to Mr. Lozano about purchasing a size.

If Mr. Lozano feels a student’s uniform has become “wore out” he will let the student and parent know about his too.

Thank you for your understanding.

The Breast Cancer Boot Camp

Last year, The Dojo of Karate partnered with a parent to help raise money for the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer in June.

This year, we’re going to jump ahead and host a Fitness Boot Camp to help raise money and find a cure for Breast Cancer.

We plan on hosting The 1st Annual Breast Cancer Boot Camp in May (date to be announced).  However, we  would like this to be a community and school event.

If you are interested in participating in a Fitness Boot Camp that is for a GREAT cause, I highly suggest you keep your ears peeled because this is going to be a stellar event… and a killer workout!

An example of getting the school involved is having ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Week’ where students can purchase PINK belts to wear during their training sessions to show their support.

Within the next few weeks, we will have more information about this.

Bolder Boulder 10K

Do you plan on running the Bolder Boulder this year?  Do you want someone to run with you during the Bolder Boulder?

Well, we would like to put together a group of adults, parents, and kids interested in participating in this annual event hosted in Boulder.

Mr. Lozano ran the Bolder Boulder a few years ago and had a blast!  Even if you’ve never ran a 10K, you’ll have some fun because several families get together to run this event.

The Bolder Boulder is hosted on Memorial Day Weekend, so if you’re in town, you should make an attempt to run it!

We’ll have more information about this too.

Well, that is pretty much it for now.

Until next time!

Sensei Lozano

Free Adult Self-Defense Seminar In Westminster & Broomfield

Westminster, CO – February 23rd, 2010 — Martial Arts expert and local business owner, Javier Lozano, Jr. owns a Karate and Fitness school in Westminster called The Dojo of Karate.  He will be hosting a free Adult Self Defense seminar on Saturday, March 20th from 10:30am to 12:00pm for residents of Westminster, Broomfield, and Thornton, Colorado.

This is an opportunity for both men and women to gain some knowledge about self-defense skills, such as striking, kicking, and blocking, as well as basic awareness skills and what an attacker looks for.

Javier Lozano has been training in the Martial Arts for 20 years now and currently holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Karate.  He is also a former World Champion Sport Karate competitor and is certified as a Self-Defense Instructor under Michael D. Massie’s  Martial Arts School Alliance International.

He brings a wealth of knowledge and information from his background, training, and cross-training with other arts and styles.

Why is he hosting a free Adult Self-Defense Seminar?

Lozano says “during a down economy, many of us are short on confidence.  By teaching adults basic self-defense skills, they will gain more confidence in themselves, as well as improve their awareness.”

What will he be teaching during this free Self-Defense Seminar?

Master Lozano can’t go into detail about the seminar, but adults can expect to learn how an attacker thinks when selecting victims, to executing proper self-defense techniques that is proven to injure or slow-down an attacker when performed properly.  However, the most important thing to remember is that these self-defense moves are easy to perform, and almost anyone can do it.

In addition, the training will be reality based, so participants will have an opportunity to try new, learned kicks and strikes on heavy bags, shields, and partners – while using controlled contact.

“We don’t want people walking out of our Self-Defense Seminar injured and deflated, rather empowered and confident” say Lozano.  “That’s why our reality based training is so popular amongst our adult students because you actually learn how to react to an attacker.”

Who can attend this Self-Defense Seminar?

Master Lozano decided to open this seminar to the public for both men and women over the age of 18.  Initially, it was going to be a Women’s Self-Defense course, however, “many of our dad’s were sort of disappointed they couldn’t attend” says Lozano.  “After getting good feedback from our parents, we decided to make this an Adult Self-Defense Seminar.  However, when participants work with partners they will be matched up with someone of the same gender.”

How do you sign up for the Self-Defense Seminar?

The Dojo of Karate has been getting several inquires from parents who’s child trains at the school, as well as their friends.  With that said, they will cap attendance to approximately 26 participants.  However, if demand increases, Sensei Lozano will open another time slot.

Mr. Lozano suggest you reserve your spot for the free Adult Self-Defense Seminar online by going to: www.AdultSelfDefense.com This way you will be guaranteed a spot.

Or, you can simply call The Dojo of Karate to learn more about the seminar and make your reservation over the phone by calling 303.920.4500.

January Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

Dear Students & Parents,

First and foremost, HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!

The Dojo of Karate would like to first thank you for all of your support and encouragement during 2009.  It has been a wonderful journey so far, and we look forward to see what 2010 has to bring us!

Many of you have been asking how close The Dojo of Karate got to reaching our goal of 100 students, and well, we fell a bit short, but nothing to hang our heads down.

We finished the year with 88 students, which compared to the corporate giants across the U.S., that’s pretty good.

Class Schedule

We are currently looking at the class schedule for 2010 and getting feedback from many parents about times that could possibly work.  We have taken your input into consideration and will be looking at expanding our class schedule within the next 2 months.  A common request has been earlier classes for the stay-at-home parent.  So, we will address this as soon as possible.

Our Children Intermediate class has grown tremendously, and therefore we made some modifications.  For the meantime, we are allowing students in the Intermediate ranks to attend classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4pm or 6pm.

Please make sure if you plan on attending a certain class time, that you commit to that slot, so we can prepare for possible overflow.

Belt Tests

Many of you have noticed that our belt tests are currently being held once per month on a Friday during class – instead of creating an actual belt test.  We are going to continue this format until further notice.  It seemed to work fine during the Holidays, however, as our school grows, we may need to revert back to our old format — canceling classes on Friday and having a separate belt test.

Parent Appreciation Month

We really appreciate all that our parents do at The Dojo of Karate.  You bring your child(ren) to and from classes, feed them, prepare them for school, look over their homework, and all of the other unnoticed things many of us miss.

To show our appreciation, we are introducing a new program called Parent Appreciation Month.

If you have a child enrolled in one of our Martial Arts programs, than a parent can tryout 1 month of traditional Karate, Adult Self-Defense, Fitness Kickboxing, or Fitness Boot Camp for FREE.

Many of you have been hinting at the fact of giving one of our programs a shot… now this way you’ve got nothing to lose!

If you are interested in taking advantage of Parent Appreciation Month, please contact Mr. Lozano and setup an appointment with him, to discuss the program.

2009 Holiday Party & Banquet

Our 1st Annual Holiday Party was a great success.  We had about 85 people attend, and it was a sure blast.  If you happened to miss it, hopefully you can attend the next one.  But, we’ll probably have to host the party at a different venue because it was a tight fit in the school.

We also had a slide show, called The Dojo of Karate Year in Review – 2009.  If you haven’t seen it yet, go to YouTube and watch it there!  It basically takes you through the beginning, when The Dojo of Karate was preparing to open, to where it is now.

We than ended up giving out awards to various students for their amazing efforts in class.  For 2010, we would like to get the entire school involved in helping create different categories, so we can recognize outstanding students in our school.  As December nears again, we’ll announce it.

Board Breaking Seminar

Have you ever wanted to learn how to break a board with a sweet punch or powerful kick?  How about we teach you how to properly break boards, and have fun doing it.

We will host our first Board Breaking Seminar on Saturday, January 30th 2010 from 11am to 1pm.

This is your opportunity to learn how to properly break boards with a hammer fist strike, reverse punch, elbow strike, front kick or side kick.

We will have various board sizes for kids and adults of different ages.  Each student will have approximately 3-5 boards a piece with their initial entrance fee, and you can purchase more at an additional cost.

The cost of the Board Breaking Seminar has not been determined yet, but once we find out, we’ll let you know.

Inter-School Tournament

This has been something that The Dojo of Karate has been wanting to plan for a few months, but due to conflicting times, it has been put off… until now!

The Dojo of Karate will be hosting our 1st Annual Inter School Tournament on Saturday, February 27th 2010, from 10am to 1pm.

Each student will have an opportunity to learn what it is like to compete in a real Karate tournament, without the pressure that comes with competing at Open Karate Tournaments.

Students will be entered in various divisions by age and rank, in order to level out the competition equally.  Every student that enters the tournament must compete in both Forms and Sparring, as this will teach everyone how to balance their Martial Arts training at The Dojo.

There will be awards for 1st place through 3rd place competitors, and finalists awards for everyone else that competes.  So, no one goes hope empty handed!

We will also need adult volunteers to help judge in divisions and keep time and keep score during each event.  Volunteers will receive special training on how to properly perform each of these duties.

The cost for the tournament is yet to be determined, but we would like for families to mark your calendar, as this is a school function, and we would like for everyone to participate in it, since it is part of your Martial Arts training.

New School Closure Policy

The Dojo of Karate will now be observing U.S. Bank Holidays throughout the year, unless otherwise announced during classes.

In addition we will be closing The Dojo for 1 week during Independence Day and 1 week during Christmas.  This will allow for Mr. Lozano to spend time with his family.

Below is a list of Holidays we will be observing:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Day
  • Presidents Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day (1 Week)
  • Labor Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day (2 Days)
  • Christmas Day ( 1 Week)
  • New Year’s Eve

We will also be periodically closed on a Fridays due to training seminars.  These days will be announced ahead of time.

Group Private Lessons

Recently we have had parents ask about Group Private Lessons.  Mr. Lozano is available for these types of lessons and they can be scheduled ahead of time.  We offer group discounts to students of 2-4 participants.

Lessons can be for 30 minutes or 60 minutes, and can cover anything that the students may want to review or learn.

Please contact Mr. Lozano to get pricing options and available times.

Corporate Seminars

The Dojo of Karate is looking for companies that are interested in taking advantage of corporate seminars that will cover Self-Defense and/or our Fitness Programs.

These seminars for for adults looking to learn basic self-defense skills, to give participants the confidence necessary to protect one’s self.

If the company is interested in a Lunch Workout, than we can conduct Fitness Boot Camp Sessions twice a week.

These seminars will be hosted at the companies location, however, it depends if there is enough space for all participants.

If your company would like to discuss more about these seminars, please have an associate contact The Dojo of Karate or pass on the main contact person’s information to Mr. Lozano, so we can get in touch with them.

Until Next Time…
