November Martial Arts Newsletter – 2011
Greetings Everyone!
Well, as many of you know, Susan and I just got married on Friday, November 4th @ the Grant-Humphreys Mansion — and it was a spectacular evening.
The ceremony went smooth and everyone at the reception had a really good time.
I’ll post some pictures and videos of the wedding as soon as we get more photos from friends, families, and guests.
Holiday Potluck & Award Banquet
It’s back again! Our 3rd Annual Holiday Potluck & Award Banquet!!!
What Is It?
This is the time of year that The Dojo of Karate & Fitness hosts a potluck where members, families and friends can get together and hangout. Get to know each other. Or simply catch up.
When Is It?
The 3rd Annual Potluck will be on Sunday, December 11th from 2:00PM to 4:00PM.
Where Is It?
It will be hosted at the CrossRoads Church in Northglenn, on the corner of 104th and Huron. Click this link for directions.
What To Bring?
We would like for each family to please bring a dish (i.e. Appetizer, Dinner, and/or Dessert) to share with everyone. Last year we had about 120 guests attend, and we may have more this year. So please plan / cook accordingly.
What’s The Award Banquet?
Well, this is my opportunity as an instructor to award students in my school for their hard work, effort, dedication, and perseverance in training at The Dojo of Karate & Fitness. We have some of the highest standards for martial arts training, and I believe that students should be praised in front of their peers for their efforts.
Please make sure to signup your family and let us know how many guests you plan on bringing with you. The signup sheet will be at the front desk.
We look forward to seeing you guys there!

Black Belt Exam & Seminar
The day that many of our students have been waiting for… or at least one of the reasons they joined Karate. To achieve a Black Belt!
I’ve spoken with Sensei Bob Nash and a few other Black Belt Examiners, and we plan on hosting a Black Belt Exam on the weekend of March 16th, 17th, & 18th 2012.
We have a few Black Belt candidates that are almost ready and prepared to take the exam next year, and I am going to do everything I can to help them pass their Black Belt Test.
With that said, on that weekend, we will also have a Wado Kai Karate Seminar, over the entire weekend.
Students will have an opportunity to train with Sensei Nash, who is considered as one of the best Wado Kai teachers and practitioners in the world. I am personally honored to be his student and learn from one of the best in our style of Karate.
We will have more information regarding the seminar, as far as who can attend, how long the sessions will be, and how much the cost of the seminar is.
The goal is to host two seminars per year by bringing out Sensei Nash for a long weekend of training. He is in high demand as a guest instructor all over the world, and to have him come to our dojo is just amazing.
Karate Class Updates
The Dojo of Karate & Fitness has been quite consistent in keeping the same class schedule for nearly 2 years, and this has helped with parents creating a schedule and allowed The Dojo to grow at a steady rate.
We will be making a class update to Fridays, starting in 2012.
This is actually a good update because its for students that are preparing to test for Black Belt. Instead of hosting 2-3 hour training sessions on a Saturday morning (that will interfere with my snowboarding), I will host regular training sessions on Friday evenings.
However, we will be removing the 5:30PM 7-12 year old Intermediate / Advanced class from the schedule and moving the Black Belt Club class to 5:30PM instead.
The reason behind this are two fold. 1) About 95% of the students that attend the 5:30PM Int / Adv class are the same students that attend Black Belt Club. So it doesn’t make sense to have essentially two of the same classes. 2) Earlier classes would be difficult for most families to attend, and later classes would be difficult for most families, as many of them start their weekend relatively early.
Therefore, we will be adding an Elite Club Class at 6:15PM on Fridays. This class are for students that are apart of our Elite Club and / or training for Black Belt. This will be ALL advanced training. So, only a select few students who have been hand picked will be apart of this program. No exceptions. Students will either go through mini belt exam sessions to prepare them for the Dan Exam, or start training on advanced katas and techniques. Essentially, it’s the stuff that I learn when I attend seminars with Sensei Nash.
More to come later…
Well, that’s it for now.
Happy Thanksgiving!
October Martial Arts Newsletter – 2011
Greetings!
I hope this newsletter for October finds everyone doing well.
Below are some events taking place this month and in the next couple of months.
Women Self-Defense Clinic
So, as many of you know, we are hosting our Women Self-Defense clinic for Saturday, October 8th from 9am to 4pm. This is a 6 hour self-protection course that will teach you the Level 1 curriculum of empty hand self-defense.
The class with go over the following:
- Proper striking, kicking, blocking and punching techniques.
- How to move and evade potential attacks.
- Understanding how an attacker thinks and picks their prey.
- Escaping from chokes, holds, and grabs with effective and easy techniques.
- De-escalating problematic incidents that can lead to violence.
- Escapes from assault positions with smooth techniques.
The 6 Hour Women Self-Defense course is only $75 per participant and is only limited to the first 20 registrants. If you are interested in reserving your spot, we have approximately 5 slots available, please contact Sensei Javier Lozano, Jr. by emailing him at: [email protected] From there he will send you a link to pay for the course via PayPal.
Eat This, Not That Seminar
As parents, family members, or simply humans — many of us try to eat healthy. Unfortunately, many of the food products at the grocery stores are misleading…
This is what I mean.
Many packaged products tend to have ingredients that our body does not know how to process correctly. Or better yet, they are loaded with sugars — even though the front of the package says “only 100 calories” or “no trans-fats”, etc…
Eat This, Not That is a great class for parents, grandparents, adults, friends, and family members interested in learning how to eat healthier by making proper food choices.
Diet is one of the reason Americans are suffering from various diseases, including cancer, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart conditions, etc.
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s NOT the ONLY reason… it’s simply one of the reasons.
If you know how to make proper food choices for you and your family, you begin to limit the risks your family can potentially suffer in the future, and increase the way your body can function at a maximum level. Even if you’re just a normal person, living life day-to-day, or an athlete training for your next 10K run.
Eat This, Not is a FREE seminar open to the public.
The seminar will take place on Monday October 17th, Friday October 21st, and Saturday October 22nd all at 10:00 AM. It will last approximately 1 hour, including a Q & A segment.
If you are interested in reserving your spot, please email me at: [email protected] And, if you want to invite someone, please just let me know and we’ll put them on the list.
School Closure
Please keep in mind that we will be closed the following days:
Thursday, November 3rd – My wedding rehearsal dinner
Friday, November 4th – My wedding
Holiday Potluck & Award Banquet
As tradition, we always host a Holiday Potluck & Award Banquet at The Dojo of Karate. Right now we have not set a date, but as soon as we find one, we’ll let you know.
Typically during the Holiday Potluck we have students and their family members bring a dish to share with other guests. This ranges, from desserts, hot dishes, cold dishes, drinks, and appetizers.
After dinner, we play a slide show with events that took place that year at The Dojo of Karate, which is always a nice little recap of how the year went.
And finally, we finish with the Award Banquet. This is Sensei Lozano’s opportunity to reward students in the school for their hard effort in training at The Dojo of Karate. Obviously not every student will receive a reward, as it loses it’s prestige… but those that are fortunate enough to receive an award get to have a day to shine in the spot light for their dedicated training in the martial arts.
More information to come shortly…
September Martial Arts Newsletter – 2011
Greetings!
I greatly apologize for not getting the July & August newsletter out, but with the craziness from our boot camps selling over 300 GroupOns and managing the school with nearly 35 classes per week that I’m teaching, and preparing for a wedding, time is just short at the moment.
So, here’s the update for the month of August and what to expect over the next few months.
Belt Test
This month we will need to move the belt test up to October 7th at 5:00PM instead of September 30th, due to a wedding I will be attending in Boston for my little sister.
So, stripe test week will be on the week of October 3rd.
October’s belt test will be on October 28th at 5:00PM too.
Please keep in mind that all students in grade school, middle school, or high school that are belt testing will need to turn in a permission slip to test that is signed by one’s parents and school teacher(s). We did not do it over the summer because… it was summer.
School Closures
Below is a list of school closures from September to December.
Thursday, September 29th – Sister’s wedding in Boston
Thursday, November 3rd – My wedding rehearsal dinner
Friday, November 4th – My wedding (this is tentative, unless we get assistance from students to teach)
Wednesday – Friday, November 23rd – 25th – Thanksgiving
Monday, November 28th – Returning from my Honeymoon (this is tentative)
Friday, December 23rd – Christmas (last minute shoppers probably need this)
Monday, December 26th – Christmas (last minute shoppers enjoying their toys)
Friday, December 30th – Pre New Years Eve
Monday, January 2nd – Post New Years Day
Please mark your calendars so you can be prepared for these days.
Since we will be closed these dates, students can make up classes before and/or after these days at their regularly scheduled class, or at a lower level class.
In addition, John Demaray, one of my senior adult students will be teaching classes for me on Friday, September 23rd and Friday, September 30th.
Update On My Wedding
As many of you know, I am planning on getting married on Friday, November 4th, 2011. If you didn’t… then surprise!
Between now and then, there may be some updates to the class schedule as we get closer to our wedding, but nothing drastic.
As for my honeymoon, it will take place on the week of Thanksgiving, so students won’t miss too much class time during that time frame.
I will try to assign a colleague to help teach Karate classes on November 21st and November 22nd, so students are still on schedule with their training.
And, for those of you that are wondering who this person I’m marrying… well, we have a website, and you can learn more about the upcoming wedding.
http://www.JavierAndSusan.com
Black Belt Club
I’ve been having many students asking me about Black Belt Club and what’s involved with it. If this is something that interests you, please talk with myself, as I would like to go over the requirements of our Black Belt Club program.
These past few months, students have been learning the nunchuck, and they actually performed their nunchuck form to some of their favorite songs.
It was a total blast to watch!
This go ’round in Black Belt Club, we will be teaching students a new ‘creative kata’ that can be choreographed with music. I will be teaching the importance of stage presence, confidence, when and how to yell, better punching, striking, and kicking skills, as well as many other tips and pointers.
Again, if you are interested in being apart of Black Belt Club, please talk with me, so I can go over all of the necessary requirements about BBC.
We are looking to add more students to our Black Belt Club, please remember — we are a black belt school!!!
Women Self-Defense Seminar
The Dojo of Karate will be hosting another women self-defense seminar, however this one will be a bit different.
We plan on experimenting with this new format to see if we can get more people involved in a self-defense, short course, rather then an 8-12 week program.
The Women Self-Defense Seminar will be on Saturday, October 8th from 9am to 4pm, with a 1 hour break at 12pm.
This is a 6 hour self-defense class that will teach you the following:
- Proper awareness of your surrounding.
- How to minimize your risk of becoming a victim.
- Execute accurate strikes and blocks to defend against an attacker.
- Escape from grabs, chokes, and holds with ease.
- Defend yourself during potential assaults.
- Much more!
Space is limited to only the first 20 females interested in learning this proven, yet effective self-defense skill.
The cost is only $75 per participant, and we already have between 6 and 8 people interested in partaking in this eventful day.
What will you need?
Make sure you bring water to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. A notebook to write down some notes as you train. Some food or snacks – we will be taking short breaks throughout the day with a 1 hour lunch at noon.
There will be a signup sheet at the front desk, however, to reserve your spot, you must pre-pay the $75 either by PayPal, or with Mr. Lozano.
If you have any further questions, please ask Mr. Lozano before and / or after classes.
We look forward to seeing you guys there!
Until next time,
Mr. Lozano

June Martial Arts Newsletter – 2011
Greetings!
Here’s the latest updates for our June Martial Arts Newsletter — A Cup of DoJoe.
Summer Camp Classes
As I’ve mentioned in our previous emails and during classes, we are currently offering our morning Kids Summer Camp classes on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 10:00 AM.
They are still 45 minute long sessions, but it’s a great way to make up classes for families that go out of town during the summer OR use it as your new time slot to train, instead of the evenings.
This class time will run through the middle of August.
Keep in mind that we are currently offering our 6 Week Summer Camp Special to new clients interested in trying out Karate classes at The Dojo of Karate. If you invite a friend and they enroll in our Karate Summer Camp program, you or your child will receive a $25 gift card.
Belt Test This Month
We will be doing our Belt Test this month on Thursday, June 30th from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM since we believe many families may be out of town for the 4th of July long weekend.
This will interrupt classes for the 5:30 PM beginners class and 6:15 PM intermediate class. Please make up your classes accordingly.
Students eligible to test will find out the week of stripe test week, which begins on the 27th of June.
New Black Belt Club Members
The Dojo of Karate is proud to announce that we have NEW Black Belt Club members!
These students have demonstrated dedication in their martial arts training, including a good attitude in class and hard work during every session.
Please welcome the following students to Black Belt Club.
- Jackson M.
- Ethan Wa.
- Kyle B.
If you, or your child, are interested in becoming apart of our Black Belt Club, please get in touch with Sensei Lozano to discuss the benefits and commitment needed to achieve this goal.
Not every child is eligible, but the only way to find out is to ask!
If you’re curious to know more about Black Belt Club… in a nutshell, it’s the path we’ve created to help students achieve their goal of becoming a Black Belt at The Dojo of Karate.
GroupOn Daily Deal
When you probably read this email, we will either be A) be featured on GroupOn.com as one of the Daily Deals of the Day, or B) already experienced the craziness of being featured as a GroupOn.com Daily Deal…
Either way, we wanted to inform you about it.
We are fortunate enough to be featured on GroupOn.com as one of their daily deals. They have so many business they can represent, that our getting featured is a big deal.
What’s the deal?
Well, if you buy the special via GroupOn.com, then you’ll receive 6 Weeks of Fitness Boot Camp training for only $49… I know. It’s a smoking deal. But, it deal expires at the end of the day. So, my suggestion is that you buy one for you and a friend so both of you can work out. However, you can use the deal up until December 16th, 2011… so you have time to take advantage of it.
What’s involved in our Fitness Boot Camps…?
Checkout our other website:
http://www.BroomfieldBootCamp.com
Here, you’ll find some really good information about our program.
School Closures
Here is a list of days that we plan on being closed in July.
Monday, July 4th – Independence Day
Monday – Friday, July 18th – 22nd – Sensei Lozano’s personal vacation.
Please make up classes before and/or after these days we plan on closing so that students stay on track…
Summer T-Shirts
We got to a late start in getting our T-shirts made and sold at The Dojo of Karate.
Every year, The Dojo of Karate sells t-shirts for students to wear during classes from the months of June through about mid September. Since it’s so hot outside, we allow students to wear these t-shirts as a replacement to their gi tops.
We ask that all students that wear an official t-shirt please tuck their shirts in, wear their gi pants, and bring their belts to every class.
This year we will be selling Red T-shirts with our school logo on the front, and the slogan “Black Belt Training Starts Here!” on the back with our phone number and website.
The cost of the shirts will be $25 and that includes tax.
Why do we sell new and different t-shirts every summer?
Well, many students practically live in their shirts, so families need to wash them regularly because they get dirty. Shirts then begin to fade, get nasty, and the graphics begin to crack. Instead of singling out certain kids, we simply ask that students purchase a new t-shirt design for the Summer.
Plus, it gives you a collection of t-shirts to showcase your dedication to training at The Dojo of Karate. Something that you should be proud of…
Personal Home Chef — Lisa Givens
Recently I got in touch with a personal chef located in Westminster that prepares meals for families that may always be on the run, short on time, or simply want to take some time off from preparing meals.
She is now a colleague of mine, that I personally trust, Chef Lisa Givens and she operates her own business called Gourmet Away.
She can prepare meals for the entire family or a select few, with a WIDE variety of food options that can be frozen, refrigerated or fresh when you come home, so that you can pull them out at your convenience or have a nice hot plate when you get home.
She’s prepared meals for clients that are healthy with dietary restrictions or simply great comfort food. You name it, she’s probably done it.
If you are interested in getting more information, contact Chef Lisa and let her know that Javier sent you.
If you would like your business to be featured on our newsletter, please send me an email with some information about your company, and I’d be happy to put up some information about your company and the product/services that you may offer.
Until Next Time,
Sensei Lozano

Martial Arts Summer Camps
Every summer The Dojo of Karate hosts a martial arts summer camp for kids interested in trying out Karate for a short duration of time before making the commitment of training at our dojo full time.
This is a great opportunity to invite your friends that may be interested in the martial arts because they can attend classes either in the mornings or evenings, and the referring student can attend with them at the beginners class.
With that said, our new Summer Class Schedule has been released and is available online and soon in hard copy.
Our class schedule has not changed, we’ve just added more time slots to accommodate for overflow in the Beginners Program for the Lil’ Ninjas (4.5-6 years old and Junior Kids (7-12 years old).
Below are the new time slots we plan on offering:
- Tuesdays & Thursdays – Kids Beginners, Ages 7-12 years old: 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM
- Tuesday & Thursdays – Lil’ Ninjas Beginners, Ages 4.5-6 years old: 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM
We will have be having door hangers going out around the neighborhoods over the next few weeks to promote this Summer Camp program.
Again, if you refer a student to our school, The Dojo of Karate will award you a $25 gift card of your choice, once they have enrolled in one of our programs.
School Closures
We will be closed the following dates, so please plan accordingly.
- Friday, May 20th – Sensei Nash Seminar
- Monday, May 30th – Memorial Day
- Monday, July 4th, – Independence Day
- Monday – Friday, July 18th-22nd – Instead of taking the week of Independence Day for my personal vacation, I’ve decided to move it two weeks forward.
If you plan on going on vacation over the summer, please attend extra classes before and/or after your vacation so you stay on track with your training. This includes school closures. And, if you need to attend lower level classes to make up for days missed, please let us know in advanced, but it should be fine to make up classes that way too.
Sensei Robby Smith Wadokai Seminar
My friend David Sasaki operates a dojo in Conifer, CO and he will be hosting a Wadokai seminar with guest instructor Sensei Robby Smith from New Zealand.
The seminar will take place on Fathers Day, Sunday, June 19th.
It’s all all day training event, so if you are interested, we will meet at The Dojo of Karate and drive up as a school.
The cost will be $40 per person.
There is limited space, so please let Sensei Lozano know ahead of time before it sells out.
Morning Boot Camps

Our morning boot camps will take place indoors & outdoors on Tuesdays & Thursdays starting in June 2011
We will be hosting morning boot camps starting June 7th, 2011.
They will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 9:50 AM.
