November/December Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

Colorado’s cold Fall snaps started a bit later then we typically expect, which could mean one of two things… 1) we got lucky and enjoyed a few extra weeks of shorts, t-shirts, and sandals weather, or 2) we are going to get pounded with some snowstorms this year!

Personally, I wouldn’t mind the latter because that means more days will be spent snowboarding on the weekends.

With that said, The Dojo of Karate has never really established a snow closure policy, and with good reason.  Many of our students live less then 3 miles from our facility, and by the time night falls, the snow has melted or been plowed from earlier that day.  All we say is do not use the “school reports” from news stations as your guide to see if we will be closed.

There could be some days that The Dojo of Karate closes early or all evening due to severe snowstorms, and this is mainly to keep all of our students and their family members safe.

If there happens to be a school closure, please call The Dojo of Karate and the voicemail will give you an update, or simply check your email inbox, as Mr. Lozano will more then likely send out a student wide email.

New Holiday Class Schedule

After many thoughts about how to handle Holiday closures for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years for The Dojo of Karate, we’ve decided to come up with a Holiday Class Schedule that will go into effect immediately starting this Thanksgiving, and followed by Christmas and New Years.

This has been designed to prevent low class attendance during Holidays where families take time off to travel and/or slow down their lives a bit.  And, this allows Mr. Lozano to be more productive with his classes.

In addition, students will still be able to attend two classes during that week.

Keep in mind that if you miss classes, we simply request you make up your classes by attending a few extra classes the week before and/or the week after your vacation.  That way you will be able to stay on track for your testing.

Thanksgiving Week

Open on Monday & Tuesday, November 22nd and 23rd.  Closed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, November 24th, 25th, and 26th.

Monday and Tuesday Classes will be offered at the same time slots.

4:30 PM – Lil’ Ninjas (all belt ranks)

5:30 PM – Kids Beginner / Intermediate (White through Green)

6:30 PM – Kids Advanced / Teens & Adults

8:00 PM Fitness Boot Camps

Christmas Week

Open on Monday & Tuesday, December 20th and 21st.  Closed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, December 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.

Monday and Tuesday Classes will be offered at the same time slots.

4:30 PM – Lil’ Ninjas (all belt ranks)

5:30 PM – Kids Beginner / Intermediate

6:30 PM – Kids Advanced / Teens & Adults

8:00 PM Fitness Boot Camps

News Years Eve Week

Open on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, December 27th, 28th, and 29th.  Closed Thursday and Friday, December 30th and 31st.

All classes will be offered at the normal schedule, unless noted otherwise.

Holiday Potluck, 2010

We finally found a location for the Holiday Potluck next month!

Due to our student and membership growth in all programs, we will be hosting our 2nd Annual Holiday Potluck off-site on Sunday, December 5th from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM.

It will be held at the Cross Road Church, South Campus - located at the corner of 104th Avenue and Huron Street in Northglenn, CO.

We ask all families to bring a dish to share with everyone else, ranging from drinks, entrees, appetizers, side dishes, desserts, and more.

Mr. Lozano will provide plates, napkins, plastic utensils, and cups.

There will be a signup sheet,  so you can reserve your spot.  Let us know how many family members will attend, and to let everyone know what you plan on bringing.

Broomfield FISH Food Drive

We need your help!

As every year, we ask that you donate some canned foods or non-perishable items to the Broomfield FISH by dropping them off at The Dojo of Karate.

This way, families get to enjoy an opportunity of a true Thanksgiving dinner.

Last year we raised over 475 pounds of food for the Broomfield FISH, and we had less students.  This year we have over 100 students in our school, and don’t have nearly as much food as last year.

Our goal is to donate over 500 pounds of food… and we have some work to do.

We simply ask that you bring a grocery bag full of food so we can load up the truck and demonstrate our generosity as a community.

Belt Tests For November and December

The belt test for November will be held on Friday, November 19th at 5:00 PM.  As for next month it will be held on Friday, December 17th at 5:00 PM.

Again, since these next two months are cut short by the Holidays, please make up your classes accordingly, and attend stripe testing week, so children can stay on track to their testing.

The Dojo of Karate Joining Wado Guseiai USA

If you have not read the latest article about The Dojo of Karate expanding their status to become one of the best traditional Japanese Wado Karate schools in Colorado, please check out the latest Press Release about our school joining Guseikai.

8 Week Women Self-Defense Course

On Saturday, November 6th, The Dojo of Karate hosted a free women self-defense seminar, with 30 females in attendance.

Here are some of their responses from that 2 hour seminar.

http://www.youtube.com/ColoradoSelfDefense

This was a great way for women to get introduced to practical and effective self-defense that actually works.

Starting Tuesday, January 4th we will be launching an intensive 8 Week Women Self-Defense Course.  This course will be taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:10 PM to 7:55 PM.

All participants will learn essential skills, such as proper striking techniques, effective blocking techniques, and easy to perform and remember escapes from vulnerable positions.

If you are interested in participating in this program, we are offering a Special Introductory Price of 2 for 1, where you will be able to split the cost of the 8 week program with a friend.

To learn more, please checkout the link below or talk to Mr. Lozano.

https://thedojoofkarate.com/programs/eight-week-women-self-defense-course.php

Please, keep in mind, this 8 Week Women Self-Defense Course will be offered every 8 weeks, and therefore you can not start during the middle of the course.

In addition, we are capping the program to only 20 participants.  With that said, many women at the seminar expressed a lot of interest in enrolling for the 8 Week Women Self-Defense Course.

Things To Come In 2011

There are some great things to come in 2011, that The Dojo of Karate is extremely excited about.  We will let our members know as soon as they role out.

Some of them are policies and procedures, while others are physical changes to the school, as well school events.

But to give everyone a taste, we will be hosting another Board Breaking Seminar and Inner School Karate Tournament early next year.

Until Next Time!

August / September Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

Greetings!

It seems like Summer has cruised right by us.  It’s amazing how quickly this Summer has gone by, as we approach the new academic school year.

With that said, it should be very exciting.  Students are entering new grades or going to different schools, which is a big leap for many kids.

In addition, now that many families are finally settling down from their Summer vacations, we will be able to finalize the 2nd half of our activities, as we did during the beginning of the year.

But, before we go into that, let’s just give you guys an update on everything.

Wado Karate Seminar

As many of you know, Sensei Bob Nash came to our dojo on August 7th and 8th to teach the essence of Wado Karate.  In addition, he brought along one of his top students, Sensei Peter Stoddart from Vancouver, Canada.  He is widely recognized as one of the best Wado Karate children instructors.

All of the kids that participated had a blast, which was great to see.  They learned how important it is to have solid basics, as well as be very explosive in their training.

As for Sensei Nash, he was able to make every student fine tune their techniques, stances, and overall approach to training.

I, too trained with Sensei Nash on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — and it was a very fun experience.  He helped me fine tune many of my basics, as well as take my personal training to the next level.

We just want to say thanks to Sensei Nash, Sensei Peter, and Sensei David for helping our students grow and improve their quest to becoming a Black Belt.

1st Annual Summer Potluck

Our potluck on July 31st was a HUGE success!  We had a ton of families drop by and bring their friends and relatives.  We BBQ-ed some hot dogs, while everyone brought a dish to share with the rest.

It was also nice for me to finally have some 1-to-1 conversations with parents and get to know each other more, since those opportunities don’t always present themselves.

If you missed out on this Potluck, don’t worry, we plan on having another one during the Holidays in December.  This time, though, it may be at a different location, since last year we all barely fit in the dojo.

Class Schedule Update

We are making a slight update to our class schedule for our Lil’ Ninjas and Kids Beginners.  All other classes will remain the same.

The Lil’ Ninjas -  Beginners group classes will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00 PM to 5:30 PM, while the Lil’ Ninjas – Advanced group will be going from 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM.

As for the Beginners Karate classes, these will now be available 4 days per week, Monday through Thursday from 5:30 PM to 6:15 PM.  And, we are removing the Beginners Karate classes on Fridays due to a lack of attendance from most families.

Students in the Beginners Karate Program will still be required to attend between 2 and 3 classes per week, and make up any missed classes.  If that can’t be done, then students may need to wait an additional month before testing for their next belt rank.

Referral Contest

We are having a referral contest starting August 23rd and going through September 17th, 2010.  This contest will consist of who can invite the most students to the dojo and tryout Karate classes.

Please keep in mind if you refer someone, it is highly recommended that you attend the Beginners Karate Program with them, so they feel comfortable.  This way, you can help them gain some new skills, and they get to learn cool techniques.

There will be prizes handed out every week, over the course of 4 weeks.  The prize will be a Karate gear bag, where students can store their training equipment, uniform, and belt.

In addition, if your friend or family member decides to enroll in one of our programs, the referring student will also receive a free $25 gift card to the store of their choice.  This is our way of saying thank you for the referral!

Broomfield Days

The Dojo of Karate, once again, plans on going to Broomfield’s largest community event, Broomfield Days — hosted on September 18th from 9am to 5pm.

Our booth is in a better location this year, so hopefully many of you will come by and say hi.

We also plan on having a spin wheel where participants can win free prizes, ranging from official dojo t-shirts to free VIP lessons, and birthday parties.  Tell all of your friends about this, so they have a chance to win some cool prizes.

We are looking for adults that would like to assist during Broomfield Days. This will give you a chance to learn more about our various programs, and help others learn about The Dojo of Karate.

We will have a signup sheet at the front desk, where you can assist for 1 to 2 hour blocks.

The busiest times will be from 11am to 3pm, so we may need two extra bodies to help assist with the influx.

The only requirement we ask is that you wear a Dojo of Karate t-shirt (if you don’t have one, we’ll give you one!), show up about 10 minutes early, and stick around until your block is over.

We will also need assistance in helping breakdown the booth, which should be very quick (I hope).

All assistants will get a helpful guide on what to expect and what to discuss.  But, don’t worry, you are not selling our program, simply informing people about what we teach and who we are.  VERY big difference.  The consumer makes the buying decision and we like it that way.

Inner School Karate Tournament

By popular demand, we will be hosting two Inner School Karate Tournaments per year.  This way it will give every student an opportunity to participate in a Karate tournament, instead of attending an Open Karate tournament, where various styles are accepted.

So, mark your calendar, the next Inner School Karate tournament will be hosted on Saturday, October 2nd.

We may need to rent out a facility this year because in February we had over 50 competitors, and nearly 150 people in our dojo.  It was a great turnout, but we were VERY cramped.  So, if you know of a place where we can rent out a facility, please let us know.

Once we get closer to the date, we will have more information about the location, times, and rules.

Keep in mind, EVERY martial arts student at The Dojo of Karate will have an opportunity to participate in this event.  So, if you are a white belt, you can participate.

And, EVERY student that participates will walk out with a medal.  We will have 1st through 3rd places, but also include finalists.

Tournaments are a great way to build confidence, learn some new skills, and apply your training in sport environment.  We highly encourage kids to compete in our Inner School Karate Tournament.

Summer Fistival Karate Championship

Speaking of Karate tournaments, this past weekend, we had 7 students participate at the Summer Fistival Karate Championship.  All of them showed their courage and heart by stepping into a ring and putting their skills on the line against other competitors.

Below are the following competitors and how they placed.

Andrew S. – Finalist in Forms, 4th Place in Sparring

Andrew Y. – Finalist in Forms, 4th Place in Sparring

Kim S. – 3rd Place in Forms, 3rd Place in Sparring

Adam B. – Finalist in Forms, Finalist in Sparring

Sam V. – Finalist in Forms, Finalist in Sparring

Madeline P. – 2nd Place in Forms, 4th Place in Sparring

Luana L. – Finalist in Forms, Finalist in Weapons, 4th Place in Sparring

Make sure when you see these guys, you congratulate them for their spectacular performance.

Oh, and one final note.  Madeline P. is currently ranked as the number 1 form competitor in her division by CKA (Colorado Karate Association).  If she places either 1st or 2nd in the next two tournaments she potentially has an opportunity to win a Colorado State title in Traditional Forms for 11 year old Intermediate Forms.

That’s a great accomplishment for an individual that just started training in Karate 2 years ago!

Let’s cheer her on over these next two tournaments!

Boot Camp and Adult Self Defense Promotions

Sometime in September we will be running an adult only promotion for our Fitness Boot Camps and Adult Self-Defense.

We will have more details on this shortly, but to give you an idea, the promo essentially is a 2 for 1 deal.  Two participants for the price of one.

Fitness Boot Camp Contest

We are running a contest for our current Fitness Boot Camp participants.

It’s a 6 week contest that requires all boot camp athletes to follow and document their eating habits by following our nutrition guide, attending 3 workouts at our facility and training an additional 2-3 days on their own.

The person that loses the most Body Fat Percentage wins.

All participants will need to put in a $10 buy-in and follow the rules mentioned above.  The Dojo of Karate and Fitness will than match whatever is in the pot, so if we have $100 in, than it doubles to $200.

The winner will take their winnings and hopefully go on a shopping spree!

Supporting Local Businesses

The Dojo of Karate and Fitness tries to create various partnerships with local businesses in the community, as a way to help each other grow.

For those of you that enjoy pizza, Double D’s Sourdough Pizza has a special event going on every Wednesday night, called Family Day in their Westminster location.  They are off 120th Ave and Sheridan Blvd.

This is your chance, as a family, to learn how to make pizza at Double D’s.  If you haven’t had a chance to try them out, you should…  It’s amazing!

Also, from our understanding, the candle shop next to our school, Cinter’s Aromatherapy is extending their hours due to parents dropping by and asking when they close.  They are going to try and match our business hours.

If you mention that you are a student at The Dojo of Karate, they will give you a 10% on candles and inscents.

2 Year Anniversary

As some of you may know, The Dojo of Karate and Fitness is celebrating our 2 year anniversary operating as a full time martial arts and fitness school.

This is a huge accomplishment for any business owner to successfully operate a commercial business that caters to both kids and adults.

Typically, the success rates of a business declines rapidly within the 1st two years of operations, and our school is far from becoming a statistic.

I simply want to thank everyone that is or has been a member of our martial arts and fitness school.  Without your support and business, this would have been a much more difficult journey.

And, we hope to continue to grow and allow other people experience the joys of Karate and how it can help shape the lives of so many.

Regards,

Sensei Lozano

Tamales For Sale To Help Raise Money

One of our students, Edgar R. has been training at The Dojo of Karate since October 2008.  We was one of our first Lil’ Ninjas students.

Recently, his mother found out that her sister in Mexico has been diagnosed with cancer.  We do not know to much of her status, and how she is doing, however, Claudia (Edgar’s mom) asked if she could sell Tamales in our school to help raise some money for her sister’s medical bills.

As any good person, I encouraged it, and told her that we’d send out a newsletter update about the situation.

Anyways, Claudia is selling homemade tamales, one with green chili peppers and the other with pulled pork.  They are $15 for 1 dozen… and I must say, they are quite amazing.

If you are interested in purchasing homemade tamales, please let Mr. Lozano know, so he can provide you with her phone number.

Thanks for all your help!

May Martial Arts Newsletter – 2010

Greetings from Hutto, TX!

I’m writing this months newsletter from my hotel room in Hutto, TX — a small town outside of Austin.  As we speak, I just finished an intense course of Self-Defense Grappling and achieved an Associate Instructor Certification.  In a few months I will be testing for my Level 1 certification.

Jim Mahan is the coach and creator of the Self-Defense Grappling program.  He is the owner and head trainer at Absolute Self-Defense & Fitness in Kileen, TX.  Along with his NUMEROUS credentials, he is currently the strength and conditioning coach for the 1st Annual Warrior Games, held in Colorado Springs next week.

Why is this training so important for The Dojo of Karate…?

To make a long winded answer short, I want to give all of our students the necessary tools to be successful in life and in their martial arts training.  The more I am able to share the knowledge I gain, the more our students will become complete martial artists.

Super Kids Expo

So last month a group of our Black Belt Club members participated in a Martial Arts Demonstration that took place outside of the YMCA in Lafayette.  These kids trained hard over a span of 6 weeks, and WOWED the crowd!

Parents from other schools were extremely impressed in their confidence, form, and stage presence during the demonstration, and as the Master Instructor, couldn’t be more proud of them.

If you didn’t get to see it, below is a link to the video.  Some parts were edited out, but overall, they did great.

http://blog.thedojoofkarate.com/westminster-colorado-karate/broomfield-martial-arts-demonstation-at-the-super-kids-expo

School Closures

We will be closed the following days.

Friday, May 14th

Monday, May 31st

Friday, June 4th

Monday – Friday, July 5th-9th

Please mark your calendars ahead of time.

Also, we had planned on getting a team of students and parents together to run the Bolder Boulder, however, I will need to be leaving town to Seattle for personal matters.  If there is another big event that is a 5k or 10k race, maybe The Dojo of Karate can get some students together to race it.

Buddy Day / Movie Night

We plan on hosting our popular Buddy Day and than combining it with a Movie Night for students.

Basically, students will be able to bring their friends to The Dojo of Karate for a free Karate lesson, and than stick around to watch The Karate Kid.

This will give our students a chance to share their martial arts training with a friend and enjoy a classic martial arts movie.

Buddy Day / Movie Night will be hosted on Friday, May 21st from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

We will not be providing food, so we highly suggest parents have their kids bring a snack, or feed them before the event.

Any friend that a student brings will be able to get a prize from our prize box, and if their friend enrolls in our Martial Arts classes, the student will also receive a free $25 gift card to any where they want to go.

Martial Arts Kids Summer Camp

The Dojo of Karate plans on hosting a Summer Camp this year for both students and non-students.  We are mainly promoting the Summer Camps to non-students, however, if your child is interested in participating in our Summer Camps too, please talk to Mr. Lozano.

The Martial Arts Kids Summer Camps will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8am to 12pm, starting on June 7th and ending on June 30th.

This is a great way to get people oriented into our Martial Arts program, and help teach kids life skills, agility and coordination training, and get fitness, all while having fun.

We are limiting the total amount of Summer Campers to 30 participants, with about 10 to 12 spaces reserved for students in The Dojo of Karate.

Their will be an additional fee for this service, however, it will be at a discounted rate compared to outside students.

Summer T-Shirts

The Dojo of Karate is having another T-shirt designed for the Summer of 2010, as mentioned in the previous newsletter.  Remember, all students will be required to purchase a new t-shirt this year.

The design is completely different.  Once we get a sample in, we will do pre-orders.

Summer Vacations For Students

As you know, Summer vacations are creeping up, and many families will take some time off.  Please keep in mind, that all members of The Dojo of Karate are still responsible to make up for their missed classes by attending extra days before they leave for vacation, and after they leave for vacation.

As we’ve mentioned in the past, The Dojo of Karate operates on a 48 week cycle.  There are 52 weeks in a year.  This gives you approximately 4 weeks of “wiggle room” to miss classes, go on vacation, or The Dojo closes for vacation.

As any gym membership, all membership tuition payments will still be due on your regular scheduled date.

Finally, we will have a Summer Vacation List for families to inform Mr. Lozano when you and/or your child will be on vacation.

New Split Club Members

We finally have our first members of Split Club!!!  Vira B. and Andrew Y. are the first members inducted into the Split Club by performing full splits in class.  They will be receiving a certificate and their picture will be posted on our bulletin board.

When you see either Vira B. or Andrew Y., please congratulate them for their hard work and effort.

Here’s a picture of them performing the full splits.

Martial Arts Summer Schedule

In order to keep classes at a moderate size and accommodate necessary changes to our studio, The Dojo of Karate will be providing an updated Martial Arts schedule within the next few days, which will go into effect around the 1st week of June.

In addition, Summer is around the corner and we plan on having an influx of new students enrolling in our Summer Camp Programs.  Last year, we had over 30 students enroll in our Summer Programs over the course of 2 1/2 months.

Fitness Boot Camps Going 5 Days Per Week!!!

That’s right!  We plan on offering our fitness boot camps 5 days per week starting in June, around when the new schedule change comes out.

We realized that the evening classes are extremely popular among our athletes, and that having a nice size group allows for everyone to help motivate and push each other.

The Fitness Boot Camps are looking to be offered at 7:00pm Monday-Friday… but it’s not in stone quite yet.

More than likely, we will be ending the early morning camps.

And, we plan on making boot camps continuous, meaning they will be offered year-around.

We want our athletes to make lifestyle changes in their fitness and diet.  By providing classes year-round and at a regularly scheduled time slot, participants will be able to maximize their results and achieve their goals.

More information to come shortly.

New Fitness Boot Camp Schedule

Many people have been requesting a later time slot for our Fitness Boot Camp during the week.  So, we’re gonna give it to yah!

Fitness Boot Camp Challenge

The Dojo of Karate has decided to create a friendly competition among all boot campers during the next 4 week cycle of training, which starts Monday, April 12th, 2010.

Basically, you’ll have the opportunity to WIN one FREE month of training in our Fighting Fit2 Fitness Boot Camp, if you become one of the people that loses the most body weight percentage over the course of 30 days.

However, there are some strict rules that apply, and you need to be dedicated to the fitness program… including the nutrition plan.

If you would like to learn more, click here.

The Breast Cancer Boot Camp

Due to Mr. Lozano’s travel schedule, we will be hosting our 1st Annual Breast Cancer Boot Camp on June 12th, 2010.  This will allow for us to promote The Breast Cancer Boot Camp, as well as get a jump start to helping donate funds to the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer.

During the week of June 7th – June 11th, we will have Breast Cancer Awareness week, where students can show their support by wearing Pink Belts during class.

As this event gets closer, and more organized, we will have more information

Demo Team Training Days

As many of you know, our Black Belt Club students have been training these past few weeks for the Super Kids Expo on Saturday, April 17th, 2010.

Due to Spring Break, and last minute snow storms, we will have two more practices over the next 2 Saturdays — April 3rd and April 10 at 9:30am to 11:00am.

In addition, we will need a volunteer to assist with the booth while our students are performing.  It will only be for about 20-30 minutes.

If you have questions, please talk to Mr. Lozano.

Karate T-Shirts

As many of you recall, last Summer we created t-shirts for students to wear during the Summer days, since it’s so hot outside, and to help promote The Dojo of Karate.

We plan on doing the same thing this year.

Mr. Lozano will be designing another t-shirt for students to wear, and this new t-shirt will be apart of your uniform.  You will not be allowed to wear older t-shirts from The Dojo of Karate, as we want to continue to have a uniformed look throughout the school.

In addition, we plan on making a select few of long sleeve t-shirts for Spring, however students will not be allowed to wear them during classes, only outside of The Dojo.

The Karate Kid

The remake of the new Karate Kid, starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith will be launching on Friday, June 11th, 2010.  We would like to get a group of students interested in attending the movie on opening day weekend.

We may try to shoot for an evening time slot, or possibly an early afternoon slot, since most kids will be on Summer vacation.

More info to come…

Scheduled Training Dates

As Mr. Lozano mentioned, he will periodically close The Dojo of Karate on Fridays due to training seminars.  By attending these seminars, Mr. Lozano is acquiring better knowledge and skills on how to become a better Martial Arts Instructor, as well as introduce new curriculum to our school.

Below is a list of dates that Mr. Lozano will be out of down.

  • Friday, April 30th, 2010
  • Friday, May 14th, 2010
  • Friday, June 4th, 2010

We will also be closed on Monday, May 31st for Memorial Day weekend.  As well as, July 5th – July 9th, 2010.

Until Next Time!
